Celebrating Juneteenth
June nineteenth, or Juneteenth, commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Black people in the United States were told they had been emancipated. The day has traditionally been observed with community celebrations, but in 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, the first new national holiday since Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established in 1983.
This year Juneteenth falls on a Monday; the church office will be closed that day, and celebratory events will be held across Anchorage on the 17th, 18th, and 19th of June.
