Highbush Blueberry

Vaccinium corymbosum

Native to eastern Canada and the eastern and southern United States, highbush blueberries are a deciduous shrub that can grow from 6 to 12 feet high and wide. They are commonly found in dense thickets, and thrive in moist, acidic soil such as bogs and swamps.

Blueberries of all species are an important food source for native and migratory birds, and bears and small mammals. They are equally prized by humans for their delicious fruit, and many varieties of vaccinum have been developed and cultivated as a food source by Native American peoples over the centuries. Vaccinium corymbosum has been grown commercially since at least the 20th century, with cultivars for multiple regions and climates.
