Ripe berries
Raspberries are a deciduous shrub with small thorns or prickles on their stems. They are perennial, but the stems are biennial, fruiting only in their second year. Raspberries flower in June and July, and fruits mature between July and September. The fruits are usually eaten fresh or used for jam or jelly.
Red raspberry (rubus strigosus)
Red raspberries, which reach 2-4 feet in height, are found across Alaska from interior to Southeast, but not in the far north or Aleutians. Plants are browsed in the spring by deer, moose, and mountain goats, and berries are eaten by bears in fall.
Golden raspberry is a variant of rubus strigosus or rubus idaeus (European raspberry).
Black raspberry (rubus occidentalis)
Black raspberries are native to eastern North America, and grow to between 3 and 8 feet high. They attract songbirds, game birds, and small mammals.
